Control Field Bindweed Organically

Step 1. Correctly identify your plant.

  • Perennial vine, forms dense mats and climbs over other plants, extensive root system can go as deep at 20 feet.

  • Leaves are a dull green, around 2 inches long, can have pointed or rounded tips.

  • Flowers are solitary, trumpet shaped, white to pink, 1 inch in diameter.

Step 2. Choose your method.

  • Field bindweed is very hard to get rid of once established.  Early detection is very important.

  • Small, new patches or individual plants can be hand pulled.

  • For larger established patches spray with an organic burn down herbicide and repeat during the growing season when new growth appears (every 3-4 weeks).

Step 3. Repeat.

If Field bindweed is found on your property it is very important to monitor your whole property for additional infestations. It can often be hard to spot until the white flowers are in bloom, this is a great time to walk your property to find any new infestation. Repeat treatments are very important as the key to managing field bindweed is depleting the root reserve by repeatedly killing new growth.
